The Components of a Solar Electric System

A Solar electric system also known as photovoltaic system uses one or more solar panels to convert light into electrical energy. It consists of multiple components, including the Solar Panel, Battery, Inverter, Controller and electrical devices. Now let us know about each of them in brief:

Solar Panel
– A resourceful device to produce electric power only by using natural sunrays is called a Solar Panel. This is an essential component of a Solar Electric System that changes light energy into electrical energy. These commonly comprise of arrays of Photovoltaic Cells which uses the Solar Energy directly from the Sun to produce electrical energy for our day to day use. When the sun rays strike the silicon particles present in the panel, they release electrons. Similarly when more electrons are released, a current is obtained in the cell. Being atmosphere friendly in environment, Solar panels gather the sunlight which is available in great quantity on Earth and converts it by means of the superior expertise developed by human beings into electricity.

Battery
– Think of a situation when you need a glass of hot water and its cloudy outside. So it is not always good to be on the mercy of sunrays. The battery element acts as the supreme power storage system for the home Solar Power System. They store the energy generated from the panels when it is not used. Solar energy systems use a lead-acid deep cycle battery like other Renewable Energy systems. This battery unlike other conventional batteries is designed to be more tolerant because of ongoing charging and discharging when you have uneven sunshine from one day to the next. These last longer and release the power on a constant level but are more costly than conventional batteries. Flooded batteries last longer than sealed batteries.

Inverter
– Now the charge after being stored needs to be converted to A.C as most of the electrical appliance works on A.C. An inverter plays a significant part of any power system. Inverters switch Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC). Direct Current flows in a single direction can be used directly. Alternating Current is the standard form of electricity available when you plug anything into a socket. The energy from the battery which is a form of direct current is converted into Alternating Current and used for several domestic purposes. Now a day’s using grid-capable inverters are significant as they can both supply power from the grid as well as from the batteries.

Controller
– Now after the charge being converted to A.C, there must be a controller to maintain a consistent flow of electric current from the battery. A Controller is used in arrangement with a battery. The charge controller is placed between solar module and the battery. Similarly it also stops the battery from over-charging. When the battery has received sufficient charge, the charge controller will keep back additional charging. This is also called “voltage regulating”. On the other hand when the supply from the panels goes low, the controller offers electricity from the battery. Even a bad controller might lead to damage in the battery and cause fire.

Electrical Devices
– There are a variety of different solar electrical devices available. Mostly all the electrical devices available can be run by using solar energy these days. Starting from electric bulbs, fans till refrigerators and air-cooler, all such devices can be run by solar energy.
